How to choose a Skagway excursion for your time in port
Train, Yukon drive, helicopter, Haines ferry, river float or a free history walk: how to match a Skagway excursion to your hours ashore, your budget and the weather.
By Skagway Times editors · Checked October 18, 2026
Skagway packs a gold rush railway, a highway into Canada, nearby glaciers and a walkable historic district into one small town. The trick on a cruise day is picking what fits your hours ashore. Here are the main options, what operators charge, and which need a passport.
The White Pass & Yukon Route train
The railway is the town's signature excursion. The White Pass Summit Excursion is a 40-mile round trip that takes 2.5 to 2.75 hours and needs no passport. A steam-hauled version, the Steam Summit Loop, runs about three hours.
Going further means crossing into Canada. The Fraser One Way Service is a 1.75-hour, 27.7-mile ride to Fraser, British Columbia, and a passport is required. Fraser is where passengers clear Canadian customs. The full-day Bennett Scenic Journey (8 hours) runs to Carcross, Yukon, with a stop at Bennett, B.C., and returns by motor coach; it also requires a passport.
Yukon and Klondike Highway tours
Road tours climb the South Klondike Highway over White Pass and into the Yukon. Norwegian's White Pass Railway & Yukon Expedition, for example, is a roughly 8.25-hour coach-and-train day that stops in Carcross and returns on the train from Fraser, and guests must carry a passport or other approved travel document. Smaller local companies sell private van tours instead. One private Emerald Lake itinerary that includes the Yukon Suspension Bridge runs about 7 hours for a group of up to five, with the operator noting that passports are required for the border about 15 miles north of town.
Glacier helicopter and dog-sled tours
TEMSCO Helicopters flies from the Skagway waterfront. It offers a Glacier Discovery flight and a dogsledding demonstration, which lands on Denver Glacier to meet a musher and team. A listing for the 2026 season puts the dog-sled tour at about two hours and notes that routes and landing sites can change with weather and glacier conditions. Weather is the main variable for any flightseeing tour, so ask about the cancellation policy when you book.
Haines by fast ferry, bears and eagles
Haines is about 45 minutes away by the Haines Skagway Fast Ferry, which normally runs May through September. If the ferry cancels for weather, the operator's stated remedy is a full refund. Guided packages add a wildlife day on the Haines side. Holland America's Haines Eagle Preserve Float & Wildlife Quest takes about 6.5 hours. A Chilkoot Lake wildlife tour sold by Shore Excursions Group runs 6.5 hours, with brown bear viewing listed from early August through late September. Wildlife is never guaranteed on any of these.
Whale and wildlife cruises
The fast ferry ride itself passes through water where the operator's listing mentions seals, sea lions, several whale species and bald eagles. We found no dedicated whale-watching cruise from Skagway with a price on an operator's own site, so ask your cruise line or the visitor center if whales are your priority.
Chilkoot Trail hike and float
Several companies pair a short hike on the lower Chilkoot Trail near Dyea with a gentle float on the Taiya River. Skagway Float Tours lists its Chilkoot Trail Hike and Float at about 4 hours with a 2-mile moderate hike. Carnival sells a similar 4.25-hour hiking and rafting trip, rated "difficult," with a roughly 2-mile hike and a 40-minute raft section. The full Chilkoot Trail is a multi-day backpacking route that requires a passport.
Salmon fishing
Never Monday Charters runs 4-hour trips with a maximum of six passengers. Fishing licenses are not included: each angler needs a nonresident one-day sport fishing license and a one-day king salmon stamp from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, though anyone under 16 is exempt. If the captain cancels for weather, the operator refunds the fare minus 10%.
History on foot, often free
Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is right downtown. One change to note: the park says it no longer offers ranger-led walking tours. Instead, free 25-minute Ranger Chats run several times a day from early May to late September, with no ticket needed. The park also offers free 30-minute tours of the Jeff. Smiths Parlor Museum, limited to 14 people, with tickets from the visitor center. A self-guided walking tour of park buildings, about 0.64 miles, is available through the free NPS app.
Booking through the cruise line or on your own
The big difference is what happens if a tour runs late. Royal Caribbean says that when you book through the line and the tour is delayed, the ship will wait; if it cannot, the line will arrange your return to the ship at no cost, but it will not wait for guests who are touring on their own. Princess makes the same promise for Princess-booked tours and says it will arrange transport to the next port if the ship cannot wait.
Independent sellers offer their own guarantees, but read the terms. ToursByLocals, for instance, says that in the rare event of a delay it will arrange and cover overnight accommodation and transportation to the next feasible port. That gets you back on board eventually; it does not hold the ship. The railway itself recommends booking through your cruise line's shore excursion desk for dockside boarding.
Independent booking is often cheaper; compare the two hike-and-float prices above. A fair rule: book independently for short tours that end well before all-aboard, and through the ship for long border-crossing days.
Comparison table
Prices are operators' or sellers' own published figures, adult rate, as listed when checked in October 2026. "Passport" means the operator lists one as required.

Decision guide
- Hours in port. Under six hours: stay with the Summit Excursion, a helicopter flight, a hike and float, or free downtown history. Eight hours or more: consider Bennett, Carcross or Haines.
- All-aboard time. Leave a cushion. If your tour ends close to departure, book it through the ship.
- Passport. Anything to Fraser, Bennett, Carcross or Emerald Lake needs one. No passport? The Summit Excursion and the U.S.-side tours remain open.
- Budget. Free: ranger chats and the parlor tour. Mid-range: the summit train or a float. High: helicopters, fishing (plus license), private Yukon vans.
- Mobility. The Summit train is wheelchair accessible with limited lift space; the Bennett train has no lift. Hike-and-float and fishing require agility; Holland America's Haines float is not wheelchair accessible.
- Weather. Flights are the most weather-sensitive choice. Have a ground-based backup and read cancellation policies before paying.
Check before you go
Things change. Please check these with the operator or agency before you go:
- Prices are as the operators listed them on October 18, 2026, and some sites give different figures. Confirm before you book.
- Passports. Where the table says "none listed", the operator doesn't mention one. Ask, and carry a passport anyway on any trip that goes near the Canadian border.
- Whale watching from Skagway itself is limited. Check what departs on your day, or look at Haines and Juneau tours.
