Hiking the Chilkoot Trail: what to know
Park rangers on the risks and challenges of the historic Chilkoot Trail, for anyone thinking about the hike.
The Chilkoot Trail starts at Dyea, about 9 miles from Skagway, and historically ran 33 miles over Chilkoot Pass to Lake Bennett. In 2026 the border at the pass is still closed because it is not an official port of entry, so hikers cannot complete the full trail and must turn back at the pass. This National Park Service video covers what hikers face on the trail. A short section near Dyea makes a good half-day walk with a guide.
